Empowering Museums: three recommendations for AI integration

In today’s rapidly changing world, shaped by the recent accomplishments of artificial intelligence (AI), museums are crucial places for learning and sharing. To help museums find their place in this fast-changing landscape, NEMO – The Network of European Museum Organisations, along with experts and museum members, has made some suggestions for policymakers. These ideas aim to give museums the support they need to use AI well and stay true to their mission.

These suggestions were shared at theconference called “Innovation and Integrity: Museums Paving the Way in an AI-driven Society” in Brussels, Belgium. The conference brought together policymakers from different levels to talk about how museums can best use AI.

Here are the main suggestions:

  1. Having a Plan for Museums and AI: Museums are trusted places where people go to learn and enjoy culture. It’s important for policymakers to make sure museums are included in rules and plans about AI. This way, museums can have a say in how AI is used and make sure it fits with their values.
  2. Investing in Museums to Use AI Well: To use AI effectively, museums need money for things like better equipment and training for staff. They also need help with things like copyright rules so they can use AI without problems. It’s important for policymakers to give museums the resources they need to use AI in a helpful way.
  3. Creating a Place for Museums to Learn about AI: We suggest making a special place where museums can share ideas and learn about AI together. This would help museums work together, learn from each other, and make sure AI is used in a way that’s good for everyone.
