Salvador da Bahia Declaration of the G20 Ministers of Culture
10 days before the G20 Leaders’ Summit, the Culture Working Group, comprised of culture ministers from across the globe, gathered and developed a text that calls for action on cultural diversity and social inclusion; the digital environment and copyright; the creative economy, sustainable development, and preservation; as well as the safeguarding and promotion of cultural heritage and memory. The Declaration is unprecedented in linking culture and climate change. Their open call also emphasizes the significance of cultural rights and signals the commitment of the world’s largest economies to a “new order” where culture is foundational to a fairer and more sustainable world.
Included in the robust declaration, is a call “for the full recognition and protection of culture with its intrinsic value as a transformative driver and an enabler for the achievement of the SDGs and advance the inclusion of culture as a standalone goal in future discussions on a possible post-2030 development agenda,” echoing ongoing calls to action across the sector, including Culture Action Europe’s #Culture2030Goal campaign.
