Exploring wellbeing: experiences of museum professionals of colour

The Museums Association has published Exploring wellbeing: Experiences of museum professionals of colour, a new report addressing the under-representation identified in their 2022 sector-wide wellbeing research.

Following two discovery sessions held in 2024, the report captures the lived experiences of museum professionals of colour, highlighting systemic racism, structural barriers, and the lack of organisational support as major challenges affecting wellbeing and career progression. Participants spoke openly about racism, unequal workloads, financial insecurity, and the need for greater emotional and cultural support within institutions.

The report outlines five key areas for action: fostering safe and inclusive environments, recognising and addressing barriers to inclusion, allocating leadership responsibility, monitoring wellbeing initiatives, and setting sector-wide standards. It calls on the sector to move beyond raising awareness towards meaningful, systemic change.

This work is part of the Museums Association’s ongoing commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and fair working conditions across the museum field.
