Culture is Back in the European Commission

November 27, 2019, 3:44 pm

As a part of today’s European Parliament plenary session, and preceding the approval vote on the incoming College of Commissioners, European Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen made a statement that the European cultural sector has been anxiously awaiting – the title of Commissioner-designate Mariya Gabriel has been changed to “Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Education, Culture and Youth”.

“Culture and education are what link our history with our future. This is what makes us unique…”, said Ms. von der Leyen, before officially reintroducing Ms. Gabriel with a portfolio that includes culture in both name and content. Culture Action Europe welcomes this announcement by Ms. von der Leyen as a signal of recognition of the fundamental value of culture for smart and sustainable economic growth, health and well-being, social inclusion and more.

Culture Action Europe would like to extend an enthusiastic thank you to all who supported this appeal to Bring Back Culture in the European Commission. Our petition amassed thousands of signatures and we are grateful for the efforts of members, individuals and the entire Culture Action Europe network in participating in and sharing this advocacy effort.
