Museums Change Lives Scotland
The UK Museums Association has released a new series of Museums Change Lives case studies, showing how museums across Scotland are strengthening communities and tackling social challenges.
Going beyond collecting, preserving and exhibiting heritage, Scottish museums are working with partners and communities to address issues such as social isolation, inequality and mental health. Featured projects amplify young people’s voices, reach isolated rural areas, and co-create exhibitions that open up discussion on difficult histories and social justice.
A key message is that museums are not neutral spaces but deeply embedded in their communities: they engage with diverse perspectives, revisit historical narratives, and invite people to help shape the stories being told. At a time of growing polarisation and disconnection, the Association argues, this work helps build more inclusive, resilient and connected communities.
