How the EU Must Act to Reduce Discrimination Against Artists, Cultural Workers, and Audiences with Disabilities
Europe Beyond Access and the European Arts & Disability Cluster have launched their Position Paper, titled “How the European Union Can and Must Act to Reduce Discrimination Against Artists, Cultural Workers, and Audiences with Disabilities.”
The Position Paper underscores the importance of integrating cultural rights into the core of the new Cultural Compass, emphasizing the specific rights of people with disabilities. It also raises concerns about the lack of visibility of people with disabilities in certain areas of the current European cultural discourse.
While acknowledging achievements within Creative Europe, including the adoption of the cross-cutting priority of diversity and inclusion and initiatives such as Perform Europe and Culture Moves Europe, the paper identifies persistent barriers and inequalities within the programme. It highlights the potential for Creative Europe to lead in European cultural policy through the implementation of dedicated actions, practices, and pilot programmes.
As a cultural network comprising more than 40 members across 24 European countries, the European Arts & Disability Cluster advocates for professional opportunities for artists and cultural workers with disabilities or those who are Deaf. It serves as the collective voice of artists and cultural professionals with disabilities in Europe.
