A guide to managing incidents and promoting safety in Culture

The cultural sector has been the target of disruptive demonstrations – in some cases even violent, on a psychological and physical level. Within this context, citizens’ artistic and cultural rights have been undermined and the cultural and creative sectors have been subject to threats to their artistic freedom. It is necessary to guarantee the freedom, well-being, and physical and psychological safety of all citizens, including cultural and creative professionals.

Within this backdrop, five associations based in Portugal have released a guide aiming to support cultural professionals and cultural organisations in managing disruptive or violent incidents, both at an individual and an institutional level. (Access Culture, BAD – Portuguese Association of Librarians, Archivists, Information and Documentation Professionals, ICOM Portugal, Performart, REDE – Association for Contemporary Dance).

The guide is available in both English and Portuguese and is split across four main sections:

  • What is happening?
  • What to do (before, during, and after)?
  • What are our rights and duties?
  • What resources are available to us?
