Culture and Health: strategic recommendations from the EU OMC Report
The European Union (EU) Work Plan for Culture 2023–2026 opens by recognising that “culture is an infinite source of inspiration and innovation… a fundamental part of our identities and communities.” In line with this vision, the Open Method of Coordination (OMC) Group on Culture and Health began its work in February 2024.
Mandated to explore how the EU should respond to international evidence, the Group has now delivered a landmark report that confirms that participation in cultural and creative activities—such as music, dance, visual arts, heritage, and storytelling—across the life course is a positive health behaviour. These activities contribute to health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, and social inclusion.
The OMC report presents strategic recommendations to advance this intersectoral field, demonstrating that culture and health are well-positioned to make a transformative contribution to key EU priorities, from public health to social cohesion.
