The Atlas of Independent Culture and Media

The French-based organisation Arty Farty, which has been coordinating the Reset! network since 2022, recently published the second part of the Atlas of Independent Culture and Media. This publication features five concrete policy proposals developed in collaboration with the Reset! network and several other partners, including LiveDMA and the City of Lyon.

As we approach the European elections, Reset! presents this crucial addition to its Atlas, focusing on actionable recommendations for Europe’s cultural and media sectors. These five proposals are the culmination of thorough analysis, extensive meetings, and synthesising efforts, reflecting the concerns and contributions of the network’s members.

In a time of significant challenges—marked by economic concentration, threats to artistic freedom, and political interference—the proposals aim to enhance funding systems and recognition processes for independent cultural and media entities across Europe.

Here are the five proposals outlined in the Atlas:

  1. Strengthening Collaborative Alliances: Cities and Independent Cultural & Media Entities Across Europe
    • This proposal emphasizes the importance of fostering partnerships between cities and independent cultural and media organisations to create a more vibrant and resilient cultural landscape.
  2. Observatory of Concentration: Safeguarding Independence in the European Cultural and Media Sectors
    • The establishment of an observatory aims to monitor and address the risks associated with economic concentration, ensuring the continued independence of Europe’s cultural and media sectors.
  3. Empowering Voices: A Call for Recognition and Support for Independent Community Radios
    • This initiative calls for enhanced recognition and support for independent community radios, acknowledging their vital role in fostering diverse and localised media landscapes.
  4. Driving Europe’s Cultural Future: A Call for Ethical Digital Transformation in Creative Europe
    • A proposal advocating for a digital transformation that upholds ethical standards and supports the creative industries, ensuring that technological advancements benefit the entire cultural sector.
  5. Sustaining Creativity: Enhancing and Adapting the Culture Moves Europe Grant for Inclusive Cultural Mobility and Improved Working Conditions
    • This recommendation seeks to adapt and improve the Culture Moves Europe grant, promoting inclusive cultural mobility and better working conditions for creatives across the continent.
