Capacity building for European Capitals of Culture: ECoCs Academy Camp

December 12, 2019, 10:20 am

The Capacity Building for European Capitals of Culture project supports capacity building and peer-learning activities for European Capitals of Culture (#ECoCs). Initiated by the European Commission, the project is running for 30 months, from October 2019 until March 2022.

The project has recently launched a podcast series, in which we share insights, best practices and  know-how from experts from different fields, on topics relevant for the design and implementation of European Capitals of Culture. The first season explores the topic of Audience Development, also covered by the first Academy Camp, featuring five experts in five episodes:

  • Sylvain Pasqua, Team Leader of Capitals of Culture at the European Commission on background and development of this initiative throughout the years
  • Cristina Da Milano on the principles of audience development
  • Alessandra Gariboldi discusses managing change
  • Niels Righolt to explore iterative planning and implementation
  • Jonathan Goodacre discussing cooperation and partnerships

The second season of podcasts will be dedicated to the ‘Digital approaches to ECOCs’, looking at the ways digitalisation is revolutionising ECOCs. The season delves into new forms of communications, evaluation, artistic programming, project management and building communities, to see how they can best be used. We will be publishing the second season after the completion of the second Academy Camp which takes place from May to July 2021.

The Academy Camps themselves are a set of training programmes helping to bridge skills gaps and build capacity in the implementing teams of European Capitals of Culture (ECOCs). Each Academy Camp is followed by a publication of a webinar and a new season of podcasts for the benefit of a wider audience.

Save the date – Online discussion with experts

An interactive discussion organised within the framework of ENCATC Member talks is scheduled for 17 September 2021.  This is a great opportunity to learn more about the training that took place during the two Academy Camps, and to get a chance to discuss and debate with experts the different topics covered during the Camps.  More information will follow shortly.

Online meeting with ECOC delivery teams

An online meeting was held on 22 June 2021, where the consortium presented the state of play of the project for ECOCs delivery teams, informing them about the progress and outcomes of the contract and all available resources. You can watch the recording here.

The pool of experts and ECOC Library

The Capacity Building for European Capitals of Culture has an ongoing open call for experts, inviting professionals from different disciplines to apply and be included in the database, from which ECOC can draw when seeking specific expertise. The call will be open until February 2022, and the next round of evaluation will take place in September. The pool of experts is available on the website and invites ECOC delivery teams to benefit from it.

The project also seeks to build a repository of documents and materials relating to the European Capitals of Culture. You can share relevant documents with us to include in our open library by completing this form.
