On the Move’s Cultural Mobility Yearbook 2024

On the Move commissions researchers to explore themes closely related to its network activities and the work of its members. By addressing transversal concerns and key areas of artistic and cultural mobility, the network aims to establish a clearer understanding of current trends and movements, while also formulating policy recommendations.

As part of its multiannual programme co-funded by the European Union, On the Move is releasing the third edition of the Cultural Mobility Yearbook. This Yearbook delves into the numerous calls and resources that On the Move collects and promotes daily. Researcher John Ellingsworth has extracted data from the OTM website to analyse and identify trends, providing context around emerging and established issues in the mobility field.

Centred on training and professional development, this publication reviews activities from 2023 to provide a snapshot of the current state of the international cultural mobility sector and insight into its future direction. It also revisits trends in digital mobility (the focus of the 2022 Yearbook) and environmental sustainability (the focus of the 2023 Yearbook).

The second section of the Yearbook features two writers offering personal perspectives on training and professional development. In the first article, Birgitta Persson reflects on the evolving nature of international collaboration, outlining five key challenges for the field. These challenges include the importance of local learning, cross-collaboration, and the impact of AI and new technology on redefining the ‘live’ experience. In the second article, Vânia Rodrigues examines internationalisation in the context of the green transition, emphasising the need to ‘unlearn’ practices tied to colonialist and mercantilist legacies.
