The 2019 Edition of Beyond the Obvious conference will take place on 23-26 October 2019 in Konstanz & Kreuzlingen.

The 2019 Edition of Beyond the Obvious focuses on cultural practices in non-urban territories. “Culture Crops: Cultural Practices in Non-urban Territories” opens debates on social and cultural developments in rural places as opposed to the urban centres. What does it mean to be an artist in a rural context? What models of cultural practices are emerging in non-urban territories? What are the necessities of cultural workers operating beyond the metropolis? What kind of national, regional and European policies are needed to support artistic practices in rural areas?

Culture Crops will showcase the best practice examples from the region mixing them with similar projects coming from all over Europe in order to create a constructive exchange of ideas and to provide space for cross-border collaborations. It will bring different perspectives from arts, heritage, research, politics and economics to explore possible cross-disciplinary answers. It includes discussions about policy intervention and funding – local, national and European – and about how to foster collaboration and exchange at the European level.

Culture Crops will be the conference on the road. Various thematic itineraries (arts & cultural initiatives, heritage & museums, architecture, agriculture etc.) are proposed to the participants in order to experience the diversity of models of practice present in the region. These visits include facilitated debate and exchange between similar practices from other parts of Europe and offers an opportunity for learning and peer-to-peer exchange.

Conference will also feature high level keynote speeches and panel discussions, as well as capacity building workshops and a project marketplace.

The main program of the Culture Crops conference is open to the public. Some of the sections of the program however are only reserved for the Culture Action Europe members (23 October morning – Board meeting, 26 October morning – Culture Action Europe Annual General Assembly).

More information, detailed agenda and logistical note will follow in due time. Make sure you have saved these dates in your calendar already!
